Title:

[African American soldiers of the 138th Transportation Company in post-war Hawaii]

Abstract:

Chiefly snapshots, mounted to leaves formerly bound in an album, depicting numerous African American soldiers stationed in Oahu, Hawaii in the years immediately following World War II. Many men are posing next to, or driving, trucks or jeeps marked "138TC" (i.e. 138th Transportation Company). Includes views of soldiers in uniform on base and during off-duty activities, especially at beaches, also at concerts, band rehearsals, playing sports, etc. Also includes some military portraits. Numerous soldiers are identified in accompanying captions, some by full name, many by nicknames (e.g. "Cool Kid Mackley", "Home Boy Preston", "Sad Soldier Tyler", "The No Good Mailman Smith"). Includes some views of the Honolulu waterfront, Diamond Head and other points of interest on the island of Oahu.
